How & Why Family Practice Matters in Workers’ Compensation
In his everyday practice, Dr. Duran assists patients in identifying a work-related injury before it’s even reported (Causation), treats the patient’s comorbid conditions (Apportionment), assists the patient in managing residual functional limitations (Permanent disability), and coordinates future medical care.
Workers’ compensation cases overlap multiple disciplines because a single workplace injury often triggers complex medical, legal, vocational, and psychological needs. Managing these claims requires knowledge across various medical specialties to address both the physical recovery and legal entitlements of the injured worker. Therefore, a Family Practice physician is uniquely trained to evaluate all these factors more accurately.
For instance, a single orthopedic claim may result in neurological deficits, behavioral changes, and complications from medical treatment. On the other hand, many internal medicine issues such as uncontrolled diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or tobacco use disorder may worsen the outcomes of an orthopedic surgery. Other somatic complaints such as dizziness, headache, or chest pain may be rooted in or amplified by psychological issues, which a Family Practice physician can assist with identifying.
Family Medicine acts as a core base of healthcare by offering continuous, cost-efficient, whole-person care and managing chronic conditions efficiently and effectively.
Medical specialists focus on one body system. A family medicine physician sees the whole person, and when it comes to injured workers, that perspective matters.
Unlike organ or disease-focused specialties, family physicians view patients within the context of their activities of daily living, family dynamics, work environment, and local communities, bridging occupational health, medical-legal concepts, and individual clinical treatment.
Family Practice is THE Specialist of ALL Specialists
Family Practice is the only specialty trained to understand how & why multiple medical conditions interact. Rather than immediately sending patients to multiple specialists, Dr. Jose J. Hernandez Duran:
✓ Evaluates the whole picture
✓ Identifies the root cause of symptoms
✓ Connects physical and psychological presentations
✓ Provides practical recommendations
✓ Appropriately refers when necessary
✓ Helps control unnecessary medical costs
The result? A more efficient, comprehensive evaluation process.
